Workshop Descriptions

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

A.  Relational Leadership

Judith Jordan, Ph.D.
This workshop will explore how we can enhance our ability to lead effectively by learning and utilizing relational principles.  RCT (Relational-Cultural Theory) points to the centrality of connection in people's lives.  Growth-fostering relationships are characterized by mutual empathy, profound respect and a recognition of a deep human desire to contribute to the growth of others.  This session will be an opportunity to learn some of the primary components of RCT and how it informs Relational Leadership.

B.  The Power of Appreciation

Virleen Carlson, Ph.D.
The campus etiquette varies widely for when to send thank you notes, quick e-mails, or portfolio-quality letters of thanks to colleagues.  Using the literature from psychology, marketing, business, education, and communication, Dr. Carlson will engage participants in a lively interchange on how one's career can be built on a combination of good will plus political savvy.  Participants will leave with an annotated bibliography, handouts, and the inspiration to replicate this session on their own campuses to build a positive culture of appreciation.

C.  Women and Money:  Not an Oxymoron

Suzanne Aymes, Elisabeth J. Medvedow, Esq., Lauren Stiller Rikleen, Esq., and Panel
A panel of professional women will confront the "gender gap" in wages.  Pay inequities between women and men have garnered national attention.  Historically, women have earned less than men in virtually every job and profession, and the advent of the 21st century has not in any way resolved the matter.  Yet, women rarely talk about this thorny issue.  Equal pay for equal work should be a fundamental right.  Change will not occur without women leaders becoming comfortable discussing salaries and challenging work environments to ensure equal pay for all working women.

12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m.   Lunch

Workshop Descriptions

1:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.

E.  Demystifying Finance

Carole Cowan, Ph.D.
Do you feel insecure or hampered in your career by a lack of knowledge of the world of academic finance, funding and budgeting?  Learn the language and basics of college finance, as well as how finances inform executive decision-making.  This workshop will help you be more comfortable and confident in your knowledge as you advance in your career.

F.  Career Enhaning Moves from 35 Female Execs

Pamela Lenehan
Today's senior executives claim that they are willing to promote the best people, regardless of gender.  However, statistically men continue to hold more top positions than women.  Lenehan interviewed 35 executive women for their advice on how women can move from entry-level positions to senior management: they shared a wealth of advice and strategies that anyone can implement.  You'll learn how to:  actively manage your career, communicate in the language of business, find leadership opportunities and good mentors, develop a personal style that projects confidence and competence, and balance work and family comfortably.

G.  Aligning Your Personal and Professional Life Goals

Caryl Goodman, Ph.D., Liz Blumberg, Ph.D., and Panel
This workshop will explore the issues related to work and family through recent research findings and personal experiences of the diverse panel members.  Workshop participants will participate in an exercise that will highlight their personal ideals and life priorities and aid them in aligning their values and professional goals.

H.  Professional Presence Seminar

Judith Bowan
At a time when ethics have been compromised and trust violated, rebuilding trust and relationships is a challenge we all acknowledge and embrace; without trust, there is no relationship.  The key to rebuilding relationships and forging them in our professional and personal lives is Professional Presence, and remembering that Nuances Matter.  This sessin will address key issues pertaining to Professional Presence, and the all-important "First Impression," as well as other essential networking skills.

4:00 - 4:45 p.m.   Closing:  Networking and Give-aways
