Keynote Presentation
"Why am I a Teacher?: Developing a Philosophical Identity"
John Perricone, author of Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching
John Perricone has twenty years of classroom experience and has won numerous local, state, and national excellence in teaching awards. Mr. Perricone’s thesis is that one’s philosophy of life is intimately tied to one’s identity, and that it is this philosophical identity (conscious or otherwise) that ultimately dictates one’s professional teaching style. Philosophical identity also distinguishes those who find joy and passion in the teaching profession from those who consider it drudgery. In this presentation Mr. Perricone will invite the audience to participate in a series of introspective exercises designed to help them better understand themselves and the professional path upon which they have embarked. For anyone serious about the teaching profession, this is an experience not to be missed.
Thursday Evening
84 Minutes with Dr. Dan Pukstas
Dan Pukstas has been teaching English at Tompkins Cortland Community College since 1979. Legally blind since '94, he has won awards for teaching excellence and karaoke performance. Dr. Dan will entertain and educate with a musical featuring an enjoyable look at the foibles of the teaching profession followed by a lively workshop entitled “The Teaching Game.”
