Executive Education for Presidents Planning Meeting

The Institute for Community College Development at Cornell University (ICCD) hostied a two day convocation for community college leaders in November 2002 to develop a strategic plan to replenish the executive cohort threatened by the potential retirements of hundreds of CEO’s, vice-presidents and deans.  Given the explosive growth in community college enrollments and the increasing attention being accorded to community colleges by political leaders, the development of a leadership cohort fully equipped and engaged in modern managerial techniques is vital to America’s future. Institutions are already faced with the vexing problem of finding new leaders in search pools much shallower than in former years.

ICCD called together fifty national community college leaders —presidents, chancellors, researchers and association directors—to recommend how leadership pools can be deepened and what skill-sets must new community college leaders possess.

This convocation contained few formal presentations but engaged community college leaders in focused discussions on leadership topics and agendas.  During the two day conference participants were able to listen and participate in the strategic discussions and interact personally with the finest leaders in American community college circles.
