KEYNOTE PRESENTATION:
Media Literacy in the 21st Century College Classroom
Chris Sperry is Director of Curriculum and Staff Development for Project Look Sharp, a provider of materials, training and support for the integration of media literacy with critical thinking in today's classrooms. Drawing on his 25 years of teaching experience, Chris has authored and co-authored Project Look Sharp online curriculum kits for teaching about war, presidential campaigns, Soviet history, Africa, economics, and the Middle East through media decoding.

The presentation will include a brief introduction to the theory of media literacy education and will touch on topics such as youth culture and new technologies, and news and critical thinking. Chris will provide both a theoretical framework and classroom models for integrating media literacy and critical thinking into college curricula.

THURSDAY EVENING:
Meet the Raptors

ICCD_Raptor_ProgramThe Cornell Raptor Program was established in 1993 to provide students of the animal and biological sciences, natural resources, and veterinary medicine an opportunity to become involved directly with efforts to promote conservation of raptors - birds of prey. The CRP maintains a collection of 45-50 birds of prey that are used in several different programmatic areas including public education.

The Raptor Program includes four major components: formal classroom instruction on raptor biology and natural history; captive propagation and release of selected raptorial species; rehabilitation of sick or injured raptors; and public education programs on raptors and raptor conservation.

The CRP is administered through the Department Animal Science in the College of agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. Dr. John Parks, Professor of Animal Science, is the program director. He will be accompanied by several of the program's feathered celebrities.

GIFTS: GATHERING IDEAS FOR TEACHING SUCCESS

During this fast-paced activity, participants will share a favorite teaching tip with colleagues and receive many tips in return. Bring a copy of a one-page description of your favorite teaching tip to share. Please fill out the GIFTS section of your registration form if you wish to participate.
